People Can Fly released Outriders earlier this month to middling acclaim. With a relatively average Metacritic score of 74 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the Polish developed looter shooter managed to launch as the 3rd best selling game of March in the US according to NPD. Additionally, Outriders has been a mainstay in Xbox’s top 10 most played games on the platform. But despite this wild commercial success, likely attributed to its day and date release on Xbox Game Pass, there is flawed design decisions plaguing Outriders.

First and foremost, we need to address Outrider’s level design. It…

Xbox is positioned to come out ahead of the worldwide chip shortage

A global squeeze on the pandemic induced semiconductor shortage is impacting technology industries across the spectrum be it gaming consoles, home routers or automobiles. The degree of which is severe to the degree that US President Joe Biden is making the alleviation of domestic constraints a top priority. Narrowing in on the gaming space, Xbox appears to be uniquely positioned to weather this storm not quite unlike its contemporaries.

You may have heard of Game Pass, the Netflix-like streaming service for video games, but are unaware of how…

Xbox’s gaming subscription service is reaching peak fervor in light of several prominent third-party games having been announced for Game Pass. In the past week, we’ve learned that the upcoming looter-shooter Outriders would be debuting in Game Pass, a first for a game of this caliber. Notable titles such as Undertale, Empire of Sin, Star Wars: Squadrons and 20 Bethesda games have also made their way to Game Pass’ library.

The Nintendo Switch is a sales juggernaut having likely sold over 80 million units world wide. In 2020, the Switch accounted for 87% of console sales in Japan at 6 million units.

Compare those numbers to the PS4 which overall sold less than 10 million units in double the time the Switch has been on the market according to Hideki Yasuda in cited Famitsu sales data. This would make the PS4 the worst selling PlayStation console within Japan in Sony’s history.

A weak sales start for the PS5 doesn’t show promising signs as the console only initially sold 240,000 units…

Social discourse surrounding the premise of consolidation was sparked following Microsoft’s announcement to acquire ZeniMax Media last year. What gamers are mistaking in these discussions is the difference between an industry consolidating and one that’s monopolizing, operated by only a handful of independently owned entities. The former of the two instances would be an accurate assessment.

In the last several months we’ve seen Electronic Arts acquire Codemasters, Embracer Group absorb Gearbox Software, Tencent buyout Leyou and other such noteworthy acquisitions. Yes, the industry is consolidating. …

Xbox Wire relased a blog post today penned by Phil Spencer, VP of gaming at Microsoft, discussing the official news of Bethesda joining Xbox. In it, Spencer elusively hints at the long debated future of games like Fallout, Doom and Starfield:

“With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.”

What does this mean for title exclusivity? We still do not have a clear idea…

The European Commission has approved Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax and with it, Bethesda. This is Microsoft’s largest gaming purchase since it acquired Mojang and the Minecraft IP in 2014 for $2.5 billion.

Approval from US regulators as well as the EU signals the deal is one, not of a monopolistic nature and has no significant impact on games industry holistically, and two, is only a matter of signatures and money changing hands until closure.

Bethesda is expected to operate under Xbox autonomously from the Xbox Game Studios organization but will still report to VP of gaming at Microsoft…

These impressions contain spoilers for the first several chapters of March Comes In like a Lion’s manga.

You should really be reading March Comes In like a Lion, known as 3-gatsu no Lion in Japanese. This is an award winning story about a 17-year-old shogi protege, Rei Kiriyama, and the hurdles he faces navigating through depression after losing his family as a child. Umino Chica, author of Honey and Clover, meticulously illustrates and tenderly depicts the inner turmoil of a young man with nothing to live for other than the game that gives his life some semblance of meaning.

It’s weird because Doom 2016 itself was a soft reboot. In fact, it was a reboot of a scrapped unreleased reboot. Right out the gate I’ll say that I was not a fan of Doom Eternal. It’s not so much that the game does anything egregiously wrong, it just wasn’t what I was looking for out of Doom coming off of the 2016 release, my first real experience with the franchise.

The best way to describe Eternal is that it feels like an arcade game. Environments are less organic and more tailored to various Quake hover jumping along with arena…

Are you confused about which legal service to choose from for reading weekly shonen manga? So am I. It’s stupidly complicated at face value with three different apps available in the United States offering the same service to varying degrees: Viz, Manga Plus and Shonen Jump. The strangest part to this is that the same company, Shueisha, owns all three storefronts.

The tl;dr is this: Shonen Jump and Viz are your go-to for the full catalogues of ongoing Shonen manga. Both apps will allow you to read the first three and latest three chapters of respective series. To unlock them…
